Nurse Deb, RN
Nurse Deb, RN
This is Deb, RN. I rarely write a testimonial, but this time, I have to. The weekly pearls of October 1st, 2021, were perfect! My goodness! I was in the same situation and balancing life between continuing in med-surg, where I am already very proficient, or transitioning to higher acuity care while managing grad school. Then I met my fiancéewho lives in a rural area, which prompted me to move to a small critical access hospital. I ended up working as a clinic nurse, something I never thought of. this path allows me to study better and have dinner every night.! I was not sure how I felt until your post! I asked myself, can I be happy?? the reality is:I am happy! I realized it’s okay when the nurse path you choose is not exactly what path everyone expects after. When I read your pearl I understood things change and it is ok, maybe for the best!. Thank you, Katy! you are the best!!!

Thanks Kati. I am about to start working in Neuroscience at a major hospital in Atlanta. This is just my third year as a RN but I worked for 10 years as a LPN. I am grateful for the points you brought up. I am thinking of inviting you to my unit(pending approval) because I strongly believe in that education is a continuous on the job process for nurses, and it is always best to hear from people like you with that in depth patient experience.

I loved reading this email, especially after a long 13 hour shift. No one really discusses this topic in the nursing world. It would be amazing to have a class dedicated to dealing with the emotional and interpersonal changes that happen from school to workplace environment and incorporate it in to the nursing program in schools. One half of our job is taught in school and the other half is unfortunately learned the hard way on the floor.

I just wanted to take a moment and write to you that I am really enjoying the A fib email course. I have been an RN for just over two years and started my career on a tele unit. Due to the COVID pandemic, our unit has seen an increase in med surg overflow patients and the result has been less emphasis on cardiac centered education for new grads. Your paid courses and email courses have been so helpful to me in filling those educational gaps. I love how you can break the topic down into manageable pieces and cut straight to the most ‘need to know’ information to take care of patients. I’m not much of a basketball person, but your analogy of the cardiac electrical pathway was so spot on. I’m planning on using it when precepting new grads. Personally, it has been helpful to work through the given situation (like when a patient flips into A Fib RVR) prior to it happening in real life and has made me feel more prepared to handle the situation when it happens on the unit. Thank you so much for doing what you do to help nursing students and RNs alike. I appreciate you.

Dear Kati, I just finished reading your weekly pearls on "The pathway to being the best", 8/11/23. I was so impressed to read such an honest interpretation of what true achievement in nursing really is. Too often I watch new grads become disillusioned with nursing as a whole because of the terrible amount of stress that they place themselves under attempting to "be the best". The truth is, and has always been, that the "best" in nursing is the path that the person who has developed their craft to the point where they can smile, still be excited about going to work, and tell everyone they love what they do. Bar none, period, end of story. It does not matter what initials you have behind your name or what area of healthcare you work in but rather how much we can tell the world we are so proud of being called a nurse.

I found your latest email on moving from ICU to Med-surg really helpful! I have been on a similar career path and it helped me feel more validated and like I’m not the only, and I’m not failing for working in ICU for a couple years and then switching to a Telemetry Unit. Thank you for sharing this.

I attended my first FreshRN VIP Small Group Coaching Session, and it was extremely helpful! After talking with Kati on Zoom- which was amazing to actually meet her!- I feel more confident that I'm on the right track with my progress as a new nurse. She offered specific strategies to implement for better time management, as well as how to zero in on the most important aspects of my patients' cases. The best part is that I feel way more motivated by having these new strategies to try in order to improve my nursing care!

I really appreciated the blog on going to Tele Med Surg. The unit rarely gets respect yet the ICU RN’s refused to be floated there at my Level II Trauma Center. They couldn’t fathom handling 4-5 very sick patients. In my almost 16 years in this unit, we transitioned to adding Telemetry patients, cross training for pediatric admissions, became the in-patient chemotherapy, bio therapy infusion unit, the primary stroke unit for ischemic stroke and stable hemorrhagic stroke. When COVID hit, we were the first hospital in the country to have a COVID patient from the airplane evacuation flights to CA. As were a 34 bed unit, we became the dedicated COVID unit for 2 years. Every bed, every shift all COVID patients until they had no option but intubation. When vents were scarce, we would have high flow maxed with a non-rebreather mask maxed out and over the high flow. It is difficult to fill bedside RN positions anywhere these days, but my unit is especially challenging because it is a high demand paced unit and we work 8 hours (only unit in my hospital to do so). Nurses get their experience and many then leave for non- bedside positions. A Tele Med Surg Unit is a great unit for someone wishing to be at bedside while raising a family, continuing education, etc. I appreciate that your point of the article is advancement is not necessarily vertical but can be horizontal as well.

I went out on disability for a back injury a mere 10 months into my job as a new bedside nurse. I’m still out, a year later, and now I’m pregnant. Recovery is taking longer and I’m stressing about having “forgot” everything I learned in nursing school and on the job. But Kati’s newsletter helped calm me. Reading the letter, “The myth of “losing your skills” after stepping away from bedside nursing” helped me be more ok with this tough time in my life. I have a lot of challenges without also adding on stress about not being sure about my career (will I ever get a job again? I know nothing! Is my career over already??) Thank you, Kati, for sending out content for those of us not active in the nursing profession. We often feel alone.

hi Kati: newsletter on how to say NO I wish i had read this weeks ago. I was working in a rehab going through a takeover etc, and my preceptor was getting her BSN, she was not focused on me or training me, when i told her or asked her a question she said to me that she was certain she had already showed me that and would not answer my question, just move on, then when i asked to speak with the DON 3 times, no one got back in touch with me. I was literally drowning on the medicare pass. the 8am, 11am and 500pm medusas all melded into one and stopping for blood sugars, and vitals esp Blood pressures was a nightmare. PT kept asking to medicate their patients first and I could not juggle all that as I was new to rehab as well as the computer system. Tragic that i just got frustrated and left.
