It doesn’t feel like LinkedIn is the place to find new jobs anymore. And finding a job, in this industry, is becoming harder than ever. Why? It’s costly for companies to post a job ad. Overwhelm of applicants: with so many people looking, the amount of applicants for smaller companies can be too much that linkedIn is getting skipped entirely. And I found, since moving to AMS, that it varies per country as to where to look (making it a lot harder for anyone new to a country and looking). For a designer, this can feel overwhelming too. Where do you go? What should you be looking at? So I’m hoping this little list helps at least one person on their Design job search journey. It's about 2 years since the design market crashed. Here are my favourite resources for job seekers. It's a fantastic tool, and the free version (no affiliation) offers tons of value. I used it to help me get my last role. Chat GPT for resume and cover letters ------ 1. Feed it as much information as possible about your career. I added my resume, articles I’ve written, performance reviews, my LinkedIn description, etc. Anything that describes you as a professional. Using the "More" button on your profile, you can download your LinkedIn resume and feed it that (paid versions of Chat GPT). 2. Paste job descriptions in and ask it to create a cover letter for you. 75% will be junk. 3. Take that junk cover letter and trim it down to pull out the good bits. Chat GPT will get you started, but you have to put in some work. 4. In the same chat window, upload or paste your resume in and ask GPT to rewrite it using the “Accomplished [X], as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]” method. The output will be fantasy, but it will be a good boilerplate to start from for a resume focused on impact over output.
