Delighted to have completed the BatteryMBA, an intensive 12-week programme delivered by Battery Associates. Over the past three months, I have had the opportunity to learn from and engage with professionals from across the battery ecosystem, including specialists in battery manufacturing, supply chains, ESG, electric vehicles, energy markets, recycling, policy, and project development. As an electrical engineer working on utility-scale BESS projects, the programme provided valuable insights into many areas of the battery value chain that are not part of my routine role. It was a great opportunity to broaden my perspective and better understand the wider industry landscape. One of the highlights was participating in the case study track and co-authoring a study on: Bankability of Utility-Scale BESS: A Cross-Market Case Study of GB, ERCOT and Germany. The case study benefitted from the contributions of Maria, Ed, Vaidik, Kerem and Grace with collaboration spanning time zones across Australia, the UK, Europe, and the US. I would also like to thank Mott MacDonald for supporting my participation in the BatteryMBA programme and investing in my continued professional development. I look forward to applying these insights to future projects. Thank you to the Battery Associates team, guest speakers and fellow participants for an outstanding learning experience. #BatteryMBA #BatteryStorage #BESS #EnergyTransition #Renewables #PowerSystems #ProfessionalDevelopment

I am pleased to share that I have graduated from BatteryMBA (Cohort 17), a 12 week, CPD accredited programme delivered by Battery Associates. The programme covered the full battery value chain in depth, from raw materials and cell technologies to manufacturing, system integration, energy storage deployment, and on to second life applications, recycling, and battery policy. It combined technical and business knowledge in equal measure, taught throughout by industry practitioners actively working in each part of that chain rather than from a purely academic angle. What stood out most was how connected every stage is: a decision made at the raw material sourcing or cell chemistry level carries through to manufacturing cost, project economics, and eventually how an asset is decommissioned or recycled at end of life. Having my experience mainly concentrated on the deployment side, seeing the full picture behind it reshapes how I evaluate a project from the very first stage, not just the one I am directly responsible for. I presented “Solar hybridization with battery storage.” Storage provides a solar plant with rapid, dispatchable response, absorbing fluctuations and stabilizing the grid within seconds, a capability the Spanish blackout exposed as critical. Storage is no longer a nice to have on top of solar. It is becoming a core requirement for grid stability as renewable penetration increases. I also co authored the case study “Containerized BESS Deployment for a Data Center Operator in Spain,” weighing capital cost against resilience and how a battery system integrates with existing backup infrastructure without introducing new risk, tradeoffs that will only grow more relevant as data center power demand rises with AI. If you work in batteries, renewables, or energy storage and want a programme that connects the technical, commercial, and grid level view of this industry in one place, I would genuinely recommend BatteryMBA. A special thanks to Mariano Sydney Rubio for his continuous support throughout the programme, and to the wider Battery Associates team and Cohort 17.

Pleased to share that I've completed the Battery MBA. It covered a wide range of topics much deeper than I expected, including deep dives into cell chemistries, mining, the value chain, and recycling to complete the BESS lifecycle. Two pieces of work I'm glad to have behind me: A group case study on Multi-Purpose BESS for Island Edge Data Centres: When the UPS Becomes the Grid. Thanks to Daniël de Waal, Bhagya (Bobby) Raj, Arturo Tornero, Guillaume Bornant, and Oluwafemi Olusesan for the work on that one. And an individual essay on Battery Energy Storage System Fires Near Critical Water Infrastructure. This covered the water contamination pathways that come out of a thermal runaway event. Firewater runoff was something I did not consider as a primary risk and felt it important to discuss to inform future BESS placement. BatteryMBA Battery Associates

3 months of intensive battery discussions and learning came to an end this weekend: I am now officially part of the large community of BatteryMBA alums. Lecturers and participants all brought their unique experience to this course. Just like myself: I had my own perspective on the battery industry from previous work experiences, but there is more than one angle to look at the same object! In this sense, I got a glimpse of many aspects of our industry that weren't really familiar to me, or a different interpretation of events that I had heard of, with my favorite lecture topics being: 📚 Raw materials, especially lithium and graphite 📚 Battery testing, at the end of life and during development or for certifications And, through the case studies: 1) The European recycling landscape and all the funding possibilities that exist to bridge the "valley of death" from the demonstration plant to commercial operations 2) What are the key elements that influence profitability at the end-of-life of batteries: volume, automated workflows, raw material prices, design for circularity? Just so much: we had a few surprises when we did the calculations! Many thanks to the BatteryMBA team, who created an atmosphere where exchange across sectors, career levels, and continents came all naturally and enriched everybody. And a special mention to my teammates from the case studies: Itoro Akpan, Sara Nasser, Hitesh Pandiri, Charlotte Rump, Roman Baranja, and Yun Lee! You showed that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Let's make sure to stay connected and continue sharing insights and opportunities in the battery industry! #BatteryMBA #BatteryAssociates #Batteries #CircularEconomy #BatteryRecycling #SecondLifeBatteries #BatteryTesting

Grateful to celebrate the completion of BatteryMBA Cohort 17! 🎓 Although the programme was delivered entirely online, it created an incredibly engaging learning environment and brought together professionals from across the globe. Learning alongside such a diverse group of peers—representing different backgrounds, industries, and perspectives—made every discussion more insightful and reinforced the value of collaboration across the battery ecosystem. One of the most rewarding aspects of the journey has been the connections made along the way. Despite never sharing a physical classroom, the programme fostered a strong community and an outstanding professional network that I know will continue well beyond graduation. A sincere thank you to the organisers Battery Associates, guest speakers, and especially my fellow Cohort 17 classmates for making this such an enriching experience. It has been a privilege to learn with you all, and I'm excited to see how our paths continue to cross as we contribute to the future of the battery industry. Finally I would like to express my gratitude to my employer Datwyler Group for supporting this program! I recently completed the BatteryMBA, although batteries are not my field. I joined knowing little about cell chemistry, supply chains, or circularity, and I am leaving with a genuinely solid grounding in all of it. What surprised me the most was how every session was well organize, with instructors who clearly knew how to teach and share knowledge and not just present. For our final case study, Hot Ride: Should an E-bike Manufacturer Invest in Advanced Battery Thermal Management?, I worked with Amin Khamis, Arafat Bukenya, and Jamal Eid. Together, we explored how battery thermal management is not only a technical challenge, but also a strategic decision linked to safety, lifetime, cost, warranty risk, customer trust, and market positioning. A big thanks to Battery Associates for building something this rigorous and this well run. Honestly, I wish more programs, in any field, had this level of care put into them. Would recommend it to anyone curious about the batteries, whatever your background. #BatteryMBA #BatteryAssociates #BatteryTechnology #EnergyStorage #SustainableMobility #ThermalManagement #BatterySafety #LifelongLearning

It has been a pleasure to participate and successfully complete Cohort 16 of the BatteryMBA program over the past 12 weeks. While my primary focus was on large-scale BESS systems, I also gained great insights from the program’s broad range of topics—from raw materials, battery chemistries, and cell manufacturing to EV applications, market trends, and project economics. As part of the program, I contributed to a case study titled “Powering the Grid: De-risking BESS Deployment Across Two Continents”, collaborating with fellow professionals to explore what investors should evaluate at different stages of project development prior to acquisition. Many thanks to Tony GUILLON, KhaYr A. B., Ralf Jungblut, Mayank joshi. I also had the opportunity to present a general case on “Retrofitting a 50MW/200MWh BESS system into an operational PV plant”, with a focus on constraints such as noise limitations and space availability. Many thanks to the entire Battery Associates team, Mariano Sydney Rubio, Dr. Simon Engelke, and Dr. Garima Shukla for preparing and coordinating the programme. Looking forward to applying these insights in our projects with GreenGo Energy Group.

I am pleased to share that our team presented our case study at BatterMBA last month with Cohort 16. Our case, “BESS Permitting & Fire Safety: Navigating Deployment Decisions for Utility‑Scale Energy Storage,” examined the strategic challenges facing a grid‑scale battery developer when selecting locations for large BESS investments in the US and Europe. We focused on a central question: how to balance regulatory compliance, safety investments, permitting risk, and long‑term revenue potential. In the presentation, we explored three strategic pathways — minimum compliance, full regulatory alignment, and investing beyond requirements — and discussed the trade‑offs each creates for land use, permitting timelines, insurability, and asset reliability. A key takeaway was differentiating perceived versus actual BESS safety risks, and understanding how past incidents, evolving regulations, and integration quality influence Authority Having Jurisdiction decisions and community acceptance (Not in my back yard, NIMBY). We highlighted the importance of early regulator engagement, learning from root‑cause analyses, and recognizing that most failures arise from integration and operations rather than cells themselves. Collaborating with Curtis Davis Jr., Moses Naiman, and Craig McCall was a rewarding experience, allowing us to approach the case from regulatory, technical, operational, and strategic perspectives. I would also like to thank the Battery Associate team for building a program that promotes cross‑functional thinking across battery technology, manufacturing, policy, economics, and strategy. Thank you to Cohort 16 for the insightful questions and engaging discussion. #BatteryMBA #EnergyStorage #BESS #FireSafety #Permitting #BatteryIndustry #NIMBY

Just wrapped up the BatteryMBA program—an incredibly rewarding experience. Over the past few months, I’ve expanded my perspective on the battery ecosystem, from technical fundamentals to the business and strategic forces shaping the industry. Even more valuable was learning alongside a diverse, global cohort across the battery value chain. This experience strengthened both the technical and business perspective needed to navigate the rapidly evolving battery and EV landscape—covering lithium-ion fundamentals, supply chain dynamics, policy, and market shifts. As part of the program, I presented “Lithium Projects in the Americas and Their Role in Closing the 2035 Supply Gap,” exploring the global lithium supply-demand outlook, the challenges in meeting future demand under current market conditions, and the critical role of new projects in the U.S. and South America. I also had the opportunity to collaborate on the “Strategic Repurposing of an EV Gigafactory” case study with Tony GUILLON and Manan Parikh evaluating pathways for an underutilized EV Gigafactory —ranging from chemistry shifts (NMC to LFP) to format conversion and alignment with the growing energy storage (ESS) market. As the pace of electrification accelerates, it’s clear that batteries sit at the center of it all. I’m excited to bring these insights into my day-to-day work and continue building in this space. Very grateful for the community and conversations that made this such a great experience. Huge thanks to Mariano Sydney Rubio, Dr. Garima Shukla, Dr. Juhi . and Dr. Simon Engelke for making this happen.

On my way to enhance my skills and adopt a "T-shaped learning model", today I am happy to announce that I have successfully completed the "BatteryMBA" program organized by Battery Associates. The past 3 months were the best-spent learning months of my lifetime; covering the conceptual understanding of the battery ecosystem from cell chemistry, supply chain, policy to manufacturing, market dynamics, and business models. Apart from learning from the in-depth lecture series, I was also involved in working in two case study reports: 1) "Powering the Grid: De-resking BESS deployment across two continents": The case study looks at large-scale battery storage projects across different regions, from cold climates like Scandinavia in Europe to high-temperature markets like Texas in the USA. It focuses on how to de-risk BESS deployment by aligning technology selection, system design, and market requirements. It was a wonderful experience to learn from people of different backgrounds. I want to thank my group member Grigorios Manos, Tony GUILLON Ralf Jungblut and KhaYr A. B.. It was a great teamwork. 2)"Deploying mobile BESS for remote digital displays": This case study was a unique experience for me in terms of understanding and also how much this topic has potential in creating a real-world business model. I want to thank my team member Anoop Whabi for creating a wonderful collaboration. Apart from all, I would like to thank Battery Associates for creating such a wonderful program and also the team members Dr. Simon Engelke, Mariano Sydney Rubio, Dr. Garima Shukla, for creating a clear and understandable journey of the course. We all will remain connected for creating a better and sustainable battery environment.
