TOP TIER BIRDING APP
I would describe this app as the best (FREE) digital birding log, informational hub and social platform for professional & amateur birders.
I’ve been using this app non stop for the past 8 months. After trying a small handful of birding apps available on my IOS device I discovered Birda. This app is perfect for anyone who is keen about birding. If you’re new to birding or if you’ve had 50+ years of experience this app is by far the best out there!
Due to the length of time I’ve used this app, I’ve certainly engaged with nearly all the features.
- The ability to edit live sessions ‘post upload’
As a keen wildlife & bird photographer I cannot always view my images until hours, days and sometimes weeks after the sighting. I really enjoy revisiting my live sessions and having the freedom to add my images to the log.
- The ‘Did you know?’ tab
On each individual species tab there is a short informative fact that you may not have already known. This feature is perfect for a beginner birder to enhance their knowledge of specific birds.
- Who likes a challenge..? Well Birda is full of them!
Each year and every month new challenges are available to join. These are great fun and really engaging for hundreds of people. I’ve found these challenges to put positive pressure on my birding sessions, always trying to spot just one more specie before finishing up. Attached to these challenges are some fantastic badges that not only are awarded for challenges but also everyday sightings, mile stones and national holidays.
I do however feel there is room for improvement… I think introducing more frequent challenges on a larger scale around the country (UK) would help grow and engage a wider audience from all over. It may also bring local Birda users together.
It would also be cool to have an option to upload a short video or audio clip. This could help ID a specific species of bird and may also assist other birders to identify something they’ve heard while on a session.
Overall Birda is one of my most used apps to date. I would be lost without in. I find myself recommending it to lots of friends, family and fellow birders I meet at nature reserves without even realising it.

A bird with a beard?! Download the free app @birda_org to connect with a community of birders sharing sightings of the Bearded Tit (but double check first with Birda’s handy Species Guide). These birds dive among the lush pools and fens at Hen Reedbeds nature reserve. #BigBirdMap

Thanks to @birda_org for sending these stickers along with my t-shirt I ordered. I'm pinning them on my corkboard until I find the perfect place to stick them!

Wonderful to meet Natalie from @birda_org here @GlobalBirdfair I’ve just downloaded the their great app. If you’re a nature lover it’s a great community to be a part-of. Think ‘Strava’ for birdwatching.
