After watching the class, I shot two of my best rounds since college. (69-68 over the weekend.) More importantly, I have learned how to turn bad rounds into decent ones, and decent rounds into good ones by eliminating the big numbers and playing the odds. I was able to shoot 75 in a tournament with a struggling swing that in the past would have produced an 82 or worse. The “PGA Tour Fallacy” is the most eye-opening concept for me since I became a serious player. This program will improve ANY golfer from scratch players to beginners. Absolutely worth the investment of time and money to get more joy on the course and improve your game.

The book was next level. I’ve started this masterclass and can say it is even better than the book. If you want all the secrets to playing better golf —> they are right here. Hint.. it’s not a swing tip. Just golf nuggets on how the PLAY the game. twitter.com/practicalgolf/status/1653391999121203202

The book was helpful, but the concepts didn't come into clear view until I bought The Four Foundations Masterclass. Jon Sherman does an outstanding job laying out all aspects of how to play the game to lower your handicap, but more importantly, he explains how to better enjoy the game! His step-by-step approach is precisely what I needed to take me to the next level. The course improved my game faster than anything else I've tried on my journey to a single-digit handicap. I hope it does the same for you!

Jon's Masterclass has been an excellent adjunct to his already fantastic book. The visual aspect of this product is perfect for me. I shot my personal best score ever (at a course I never played before!) just by applying the principles of The Four Foundations. The simplicity of the content is what I have been raving to my friends about.

The Masterclass has helped me to change my attitude to my performance. I am focusing more on process & strategy, and I am measuring things other than score, such as GIR and number of doubles. This takes the pressure off me on the course and adds to my enjoyment of the game. The presentation of the material is excellent and very easy to absorb, and everything is put in the proper context. I have read the book, and this video course really enhances the learning experience!

The Four Foundations MasterClass video series is incredible.  Since taking the class, I have learned how to employ new practice and playing strategies. Another focus of the series was how to manage your expectations and especially how to have fun when playing the game you love. I plan on running through the class again starting tomorrow and I recommend anyone serious about improving their game give it a try!

I am impressed that Jon has been able to take the content of his best-selling book and create a video masterclass version of the most important parts of it. I enjoyed listening to all of the six major sections of the video, but particularly liked and got value from "Learning The Basics Of Strategy" and "The Mental Game." This video course will be a home run for all golfers, but particularly for golfers who tend to learn better by watching video content. Jon - you did it again with this Video Masterclass, thanks!

The Masterclass has provided me with a better understanding and reinforcement of the four foundations detailed in the book. I would tell other golfers that the four foundations are the other pieces of the golf game that we are left to figure out for ourselves. The greatest takeaway so far for me has been the expectations piece. The clear explanation of what a golfer of my ability can expect has made me go from frustration quite a bit of the time to a calmer, relaxed golfer. I am enjoying the game, the course I play most often, and it’s beautiful scenery. My wife has even noticed this!

It’s an important long-term investment in yourself!!

The Four Foundations has been instrumental in reshaping the way I approach golf. I've seen my scores drop and my GIR increase faster than I could have imagined. All without making a single change to my grip, setup, swing, etc. It will simplify your game, make the game more fun, and help you realize that you're probably a better golfer than you thought. The Four Foundations Masterclass is, without question, the best value in golf. Thanks, Jon!

Added to the Mount Rushmore of golf books

I own 50+ books on golf instruction from Hogan's Five Lessons to Nicklaus' Golf My Way to Pelz Short Game Bible and everything in between. Jon Sherman has written a golf instruction book that has been needed for forty years. However - there are no swing tips in Four Foundations. No magic secrets to greatness. The author provides us instruction how to 1) manage expectations and get more enjoyment out of the game by realizing how hard a game it is (through statistical analysis) and finding joy in your good shots and evaluating your poor shots and letting them go 2) taking your game to the next level and/or saving strokes through knowing your own skillset and using course management to eliminate big numbers of your scorecard 3) practicing smarter and 4) improving your mindset.I believe this would be a worthwhile purchase for casual golfers, but a must read for serious players who are looking to knock a few or possibly many shots off their handicap. The first time I read it I couldn't put it down. The second time, I got even more from it. Over the past three weeks I've implemented many of Sherman's strategies and shot some of my better rounds, but more importantly I've not beat myself up over a couple of poor rounds/holes.I lent it to one of my golf buddies and after reading it, he said he needed his own copy.I can't recommend this book enough. It's been a long time coming.

A lifetime's worth of lessons on how to play the game

Beginning when I was a kid and now for the last nearly 30 years, I've been captivated by the game of golf. So much of my pursuit of improvement has been centered around swing technique vs. ball-striking skills and the strategy and mental approach to play the game of golf. This book contains so many lessons on how to improve, many of which were new and all of which were communicated in a way that makes them easy to process and understand. I also liked the summaries at the end of each chapter - these will be very helpful when returning to review contents from a specific chapter.

Wish I had this information when I began playing and taking golf seriously.

My wife bought this book for me as a gift. I recommend anyone looking for a gift for a golfer give this serious consideration. The book focuses on how to both improve and enjoy what is a truly difficult and maddening game. Sure, I knew some of the information presented in this book. And the author does not hide the likelihood of this fact. However, the book's presentation blends numerous aspects of golf so that the reader can incorporate new with the old and simply improve their approach to the game. The book is logical and easy to read, yet makes you think about aspects of your own game. I appreciated the authors own anecdotes and clearly, golf is a love of his. If you are a golfer, buy and enjoy. Paul

The first time I played after watching the first 2.5 modules, I took the flag out of play and played to the back 2/3 of the green and took and extra clud. I am a 6 hdcp at my course and shot 75, 12 of 14 fairways and 11 greens.

Single best Golf Book EVER

I am a golfbookaholic. I have bought over 2-3 dozen golf books (usually used and inexpensively on GoodwillBooks.com). The problem with most golf books is that they deal with one small sliver of the game. Or worse they drone on about your golf swing. Read this book if you are tired of playing "Golf Swing" and want to start playing good golf. If you KNOW you have the talent to play better or you play a great nine holes followed by a abysmal nine...Try the concepts in this book and I guarantee you will lower your scores. This is one of the few books where "enjoyment of the game" is ever mentioned: Isn't that the point??? Interesting that enjoying the game (good AND bad shots) has played a part in lowering my index. Buy it: You won't be sorry!

Extraordinary insights and wisdom

I've studied the golf swing for over 50 years and have read dozens of books on the subject. This book has more wisdom and helpful insights packed into one golf book that I've read or seen. Mr. Sherman addresses not only the golf swing, but also key issues such as strategy, swing tempo, and related matters that are equally important to playing good golf as a sound golf swing. Mr. Sherman also backs up his views with advanced statistics, which have provided an improved basis for insights into golf over the past 20 years. If your goal is to understand how to play better golf, this book is for you.

A must have if you want to take your game to the next level

As a listener of the sweet spot podcast, I've been excited for this book and it did not disappoint. I liked the order of topics presented in the book and I appreciated the summary/recap of important points at the end of each chapter. Some of the stuff that I was already familiar with through Brodie/Fawcett were still helpful since they were presented with relevant data and explained in a way that's easy to understand. A+

Definitive Golf Strategy Masterpiece

Jon does a great job introducing the golf veteran and novice to time honored concepts which improve scoring. He also brilliantly blends revelations from newer technology and statistical analysis to enhance these lessons and provide new revelations to some old (and prevalent) falsehoods within the game. Finally he presents all of this information and data in a manner that is clear, easy to understand and engaging. I read the entire book (a little over 400 pages) in less than a week. This book is quite literally a page-turner and I simply could not put it down. A fine addition to any golf library and a great starting point for beginning golfers as well. You will not be disappointed!

After reading The Four Foundations, my experience on a golf course has significantly improved. Technical things, like ball striking, have improved somewhat (that takes time) but my mental approach is much more healthy and productive. I ask questions I can answer and then learn from regardless of the outcome: What does this shot require? What's my "pain point" here? Aggressive? Conservative? My game is now a conversation I have with myself and the course, making the mental engagement positively influence the outcome.

Instant improvement

I started as a low 90s golfer with a serious goal to hit 85 by end of summer. I started reading this book mid July shooting an 89 and finished July with an 84. I've shot 39 on 9 and nothing about my swing changed — the advice I found by reading this book is wholly responsible. If you're serious about taking golf seriously then I highly recommend this book as well as Jon's Twitter feed and podcast. Cheers Jon, this will hopefully be among the best books written on improving golfers' scores and outlook on the game itself.

The best book on golf you will ever read

There are countless books/videos/gadgets that promise to "fix" your game. As a passionate (but not too thoughtful) golfer, I have invested in many with little success. This book reveals the secret that the other vendors avoid - you already own the "fix". It is between your ears. Your mind controls your ability to improve not only the results, but your enjoyment of the game. In practical and simple language, the author provides a thoughtful path to true and lasting improvement. If you are serious about this crazy game, it is a must read.

Game changer!

There is swing training which we all still need and then there is a foundational transformation in the way we approach our golf game. The latter is exactly what this book provides. I'm not even done with the book yet, but already posted 2 of my best scores in back to back rounds since I've started and having more fun than I have in months! I can not recommend this book enough. A must read for golfers of any skill level!

My New Golf Bible!

The Four Foundations is the most accessible, helpful, practical book of golf wisdom and insight that I've ever read. And I've read them all.Jon is a passionate golfer who truly just wants to help folks enjoy the game more. He combines his own experiences, common sense logic and real-world data to present his case for why this is the way everyone who plays golf at virtually any level should approach this game. And it is convincing.More than simply a golf book, it's really a reference work for whatever aspect of the game you want to improve on. It challenges long held, deeply entrenched golf idioms and proves its merit building on the works of other innovative golf thinkers, like Mark Broadie, Scott Fawcett and others, while filtering the data down to something practical yet fascinating.Read it once start to finish and then go back to it as needed.

The Masterclass has been very help in expectation management. Defining what a good shot is. It showed me that I really need to work on my driver to get functional shots off the tee. It also showed me how scoring is very dependent on GIRs.

Long time listener to the pod so I was familiar with Jon and his concepts. The book puts a nice bow and everything flowing around in his head. All good stuff. Read it, listen to the pod (the sweet spot)

Demystified golf for me - improved my scores (and enjoyment of the game)

Game changing book for me. Broke 90 for the first time after reading it after averaging 100. Really helped me understand how the finer points of just about everything worked, gave me the context to make adjustments, and the confidence that comes with it. Also now I have more fun and don't take it too seriously.

Fantastic framework to help improve every aspect of your golf game.

Jon's experience as a player comes through as does his experience communicating his simple (and practical) ideas in this excellent book. He gives an approach and at least a starting point for players to explore each of these aspects of golf and how to work towards improving. There are no quick fixes in here as there should not be. Except maybe to stop aiming at that stick thing poking out of the green and just hit it to the middle!

Essential reading for anyone that wants to get better at golf

Most golf books offer to let you in on a secret formula or a quick fix for your golf game. Not this one. Jon brings you simple to understand, common sense lessons about the golf game. He doesn't promise it will be fast or easy, but what he teaches here will work and it will last. It should be required reading for anybody picking up the game, as well as those of us that are, shall we say, more "seasoned"

It's a (very difficult) game, and it should be treated as such. We need to have more realistic expectations with our outcomes while also being in the right state of mind. Reading this book can help golfers at any level, but especially those like myself (mid handicap) that need a dose of reality.

Finally, a book for the rest of us.

This is the best instruction book I've ever read for golfers who care about their score and want to improve. If you're looking to develop a "pretty" golf swing this isn't for you. There's almost no technical instruction. Instead, the author focuses on the only thing that matters in golf--how to get the ball in the hole in the fewest number of shots. The book reminds me a bit of the great tennis instruction book "Winning Ugly" by Brad Gilbert. Highly recommend this book for golfers serious about improving their game!

One of my favorites!

I read a ton of golf books and this would rank in my top 3. It feels like an encyclopedia of knowledge I can revisit. I love how many facets of the game it covers and I will be returning to it regularly for helpful reminders. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the week I finished it, I recorded my lowest score, shooting 11 strokes under my handicap!

Most refreshing golf book out now.

Finally, someone writing about the side of golf that is not talked about.Golf for years now has fallen into this trap of pure instruction, the "need" to get a coach, and focusing on mechanics. This book will help the reader realize that golf is a game not played with a swing. There's much more to the game than worrying and focusing on swing mechanics, videoing yourself, or the need to go on a track man or GC Quad. This book is a must need to any serious golfer.

A refreshing perspective for golfers looking to enjoy the game

Jon's book is a refreshing view and valuable resource for the golfer looking to enjoy the game more and improve without looking to a swing guru to give you the magic elixir. For someone such as myself that has taken hours of lessons, beat numerous balls and played thousands of rounds with modest improvement through the years, Jon's book is what your typical pay to play golfer could utilize, namely, a proven path for improvement. The book offers you a chance to take an honest and critical look at your game and provides a good perspective on better practice habits, playing strategy and enjoyment on the golf course. Looking forward to its impact on my game.

Best Round - Score and Enjoyment

This book is a must.I found the content on managing expectations, how to practice, and the pre-shot routine that gets you to more external focus was tremendous. Ditching that technical swing checklist while I sat over the ball!!! I had my best round score wise but probably more important enjoyment wise! 100% improvement in just enjoying the round. I highly recommend this book

I had previously read his 101 mistakes golfer make and took my handicap from 15 to 10.I am now down to 7 and this book opened my eyes to what I am still needing.Jon writes in a clear way making it easy to understand the message. You don't have to digest the whole book but there are some great nuggets to learn and implement each time you play/practice.

I'm sure this will help me play better golf, and to enjoy it more as well

This was my summer beach read, an easy one to digest. Even with a lot of information on all facets of playing golf, it is broken down into small bites, with key takeaways summarized after each. I would say this is the best golf instruction manual I have read, and it really has little to do with swing mechanics or technique. Just a step by step process for understanding how golfers of all levels actually play and how we can give ourselves the best chance at a satisfying outcome. Can't wait to put this approach to use in my weekly game.

Data-driven, concise, and actionable advice

I am a new golf addict at the age of 43 and have read almost all the classics of golf instruction. I now have a decent swing -- the subject of most instructional texts--but I don't have years of playing experience. So I found both the course management and expectation management sections of this book particularly helpful. Of note is that the advice is not in the form of folksy maxims (I like those too), but carefully digested data that clarifies and simplifies on-course decision-making. Highest recommendation!

Straight forward way to think about the game and improve

Jon does a nice job of assembling ways to thinking about improving your game and how to enjoy the game and improvement process more. It's been helpful, for me, to "let go" of results and focus much more on enjoyment, and ways to practice and then play. I'm still in the "high handicapper" range, but already my own consistency and enjoyment have gone up since reading Jon's book! (Yes, my scores are improved a bit also)

Excellent resource but not what you might expect

If you're looking for a magic bullet, this isn't the book for you. The title like the rest of the book, is practical. Perhaps a little more on the nose would be cerebral. Though there are some physical tips, the great benefits come from the parts dealing with expectations and the mental approach to the game. Understanding how hard golf truly is, and what is realistic, can make the game that much more enjoyable.

As a single digit handicap golfer of over 50+ years who's read numerous books, this is one of the best books on Golf I've read and there's little if anything on how to swing the club. My copy is highlighted, underlined and dogeared pages. I really consider this a reference book to go back to on a regular basis. If you're looking for how to MANAGE your game on the course, set REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, how to PRACTICE to DEVELOP skills, managing your ATTITUDE during your round then this is the book for you.

Great Book to Lower Your Score

Shot my lowest round in a few years after reading the book. It got me thinking a lot more about golf strategy rather than golf swing while I was playing.I followed the plan in the book: Hit it far off the tee but keep it in play, aim for center of green, avoid the double bogeys and take your medicine when you have to. Made several pars from first cut of rough and didn't worry about how many fairways I hit in regulation.Overall, a great book on golf strategy, practice and the mental game. I highly recommend it.

I am just over 100 pages into this awesome book and have really enjoyed it so far. The book does a great job putting the game into perspective and I am finding more enjoyment each time I play. Looking forward to reading subsequent chapters that will help me "practice with a purpose" as I primarily play the course to get my practice (which is better than practicing more than playing) Really a great read for anybody that is in need of some coaching on the mental side of the game. Rating it an 11 out of 10!

Jon did a great job on this book. It is simple and easy to put the techniques he discusses into practice. I have listened to Jon's podcasts and read his articles for years. But I found the book to be an even better organization of information. If you believe you already have listened to or read most of Jon's content, the book is still valuable. In fact, I posted my career low round immediately after reading the book. That is a small anecdotal sample size but I found myself putting Jon's techniques into play immediately on the course. Thank you Jon!

This is a great book that describes everything you need to understand about playing golf other than your swing. Author leaves that for others, but more importantly fills the gaps that all those swing books leave you with, that is, how to play your best golf. Great use of the metrics that shot tracking systems like Shot Scope provide to golfers of all skill levels. Well organized so you can reread specific topics as needed.

Great book if you're looking to improve your golf game

I'm a 15 handicap golfer and this book really helped me rethink how I approach the game. It's really helped me with aspects like how I decide to play each hole. From club selection to target selection, shot type, etc…. It's not a book about swing mechanics or anything like that. It was exactly what I needed. I've only played 2 rounds since finishing the book but I find myself getting in to less trouble on each hole simply due to better decision making. I can't recommend this book enough if you've played golf for a long time and feel like you have plateaued in performance. This book can help you save a few strokes per round without changing a thing with your current swing.

I'm 54 and I always thought I was a great golf course manager, but I've learned a tremendous amount and I'm now down to a 9 handicap from a 14 (I also took a few lessons and have added an exercise program - both suggestions he makes). It's honestly the book that has had the greatest impact in how I play the game and I'm shooting better scores (personal best of 74 recently).

A must read for any serious golfer

This book is filled with practical advice that can help any golfer. It is not a swing technique book. Jon delves into strategy, practice and the mental side of the game. For fans of his podcast, "The Sweet Spot" (also highly recommended), you will find all of the best nuggets in easy to digest chapters. There are so many helpful tips it's hard to pick a favorite but I would say his course management chapter is super helpful. I've been trying to apply his course management techniques over the past month and it takes discipline but is so worth it. I recently tied my personal best score by applying Jon's methods. This is a must read!

Something for Everyone

I've been following Jon Sherman on Twitter for several years, and I've always liked the way he approaches golf. I've implemented several of his recommendations in my game and have seen improvements. So when Jon wrote a book, I knew I had to read it, and I wasn't disappointed. This book seemingly captures the totality of Jon's thinking about the game of golf. Nearly broken up in a logical flow, it will be something I can easily go back to for reference for years to come.I believe every golfer can benefit from this book. Whether you're an aspiring pro, competitive am, or a weekend warrior you can find something in this book to help you improve or simply enhance your enjoyment of the game.

Must read for all levels of golfers

I have read many how-to books on golf. This is not necessarily a technical manual but one that helps recreational golfers manage their expectations and get a real-world view of their game vis-a-vis the pros and other amateurs. Half the battle is in the head and the other half on the course. As a psychologist, I recommend this book to help the reader get control over the mental side of the game. Worth the time and money.

Every golfer needs this book

I lowered my handicap from a 22 to a 13.7 this year, and this book is responsible for a lot of the improvement.Sherman combines data with examples to transform the way you approach the game. After reading this book, I'm choosing the shots with better odds of success. I'm working to eliminate double bogies rather than making birdies. I'm hitting driver more often. And I'm spending more time practicing tee shots and approach shots than short game. All these things are adding up to reduce my handicap, and they're all a result of reading The Four Foundations of Golf. If you're a golfer of any level, you'll get way more value than you pay for with this book.

First book (let alone golf book) I've finished in almost a year

The golf world was overdue for a great book, and Jon Sherman delivered. I will let you read the other reviews regarding the helpful content (which I found EXTREMELY helpful and thorough). I've started probably about 20 books (several of them golf books) over the last year, and this is the first one I've finished, and I finished it in about 10 days (and plan to read again). I brought it with me wherever I went so I could sneak in a chapter here or there. That should be an indicator of how helpful and consumable it is. If you have any desire to improve your golf game, get this book.

Best Golf Book currently available

It's not about your swing; we have lots of books on the golf swing. It's about the reality of what happens when you play, what happens when other people play and how they play, and the thought that has to go into your game. Expectations, strategy, statistical probabilities… this book has it all. I gave away half a dozen other books; I didn't need them on my bookshelf any longer. I recommend this book highly for every golfer.

I love this book. It has helped take charge of my game in way that is hard to explain. I feel so much more relaxed and thus confident. My expectations are more realistic. And I'm playing better. I don't think it is a coincidence that I had never broken par before the book and now I've done it twice in a month. Thank you!

Very insightful

I stumbled across the Four Foundations while peeking at golf instructional books. I am very pleased I ordered the book. This book does not give you specific swing tips or instruction. Rather, Jon Sherman provides, in my view, an excellent recipe for being able to enjoy golf. We all practice, think about the game and want to shoot better scores. He gets that. He helps you get into the proper mindset to have a steady routine, play smart and keep your expectations in check. Ultimately, the scores will follow. This book is a great complement to the other technical videos, lessons and books. Getting the right headspace is just as important.

Great help for the mental game!

As Yogi said, 90% of golf is mental, the other half is physical. If you are looking for a book on swing mechanics & techniques, this is not the book for you. But if you agree with Yogi and want to improve 90% of your game, this will help. Not a round goes by in which I don't recognize myself doing something better because of this book, or recognize myself doing some boneheaded thing that Sherman advises against. Only have had the book for a couple weeks, so my scores haven't improved noticeably, but I am becoming (slowly!) a better golfer and enjoying it more. Worth a read - (and follow him on social media.)

Great for golfers of all levels

I've followed the Practical-Golf website for a few years and have found it to be a valuable resource. So buying this book was a no-brainer for me. In the month or so I've had it, I'll point to two anecdotal successes. 1) I hit the most greens in regulation during my round yesterday (13) by following his advice on how to plan approach shots. 2) I followed his driver practice plan with my son who is just getting into golf. We spent about 75 minutes, hitting a ball and analyzing / adjusting things until we were able to get more consistent with the center of the club face. He followed that up with easily the best driving day he's ever had. These are just two nuggets from the book, there are a whole lot more. Would definitely recommend.

The core ideology of this book resonated so strongly with me. This boom has helped me to drop my handicap to the lowest it's been in 4 years. This has helped me get back into shooting in the 70s and helped me to find joy in the game even when I'm not playing my best.I cannot recommend this any higher. Every one of my regular golf partners has or is in the process of reading it as well. Worth every penny.

Incredibly Impactful!!

This book is exactly what is needed to take your MENTAL game to the next level! Its not about perfecting and correcting your swing. Its about playing the probabilities, playing to your strengths and skill level, and keeping your expectations in check. The book offers so many little tips and recommendations of how to improve your mental approach to the game, its incredible just how impactful it can be. After reading the book, I played my best round of golf I've ever played! I set a personal goal to break 90 by the end of the summer, then shattered it and scored 84 by simply applying a better mental approach to my game learned from the book. Free your mind, manage your expectations, and most of all, don't forget to have fun playing!

I love this book!

This book has been helpful for me getting back into the game of gold. I had a like story, in that I used to play a lot and loved it. But I became so competitive with myself, and placed unrealistic expectations on myself, that I lost the love and stopped playing. Now 10 years later, looking to get back into it and bought this book based on the website. HUGE win for me. This book just speaks to me, needing to refresh a love the game and focus on why golf is fun, and how to get the most out of it without trying to be something I just am not. Being a 20 handicap, is ok if you enjoy the course, the people, the sport, the tradition, etc, just enjoy it! A great read for a tired golfer looking for a renewed love of the game and some tangibles ways to get there without focusing on swing mechanics.

So .... Practical!

This book is excellent. I've followed his blog for a couple years now; even so, book form is great. My takeaways:1. At the range, I'm not experimenting enough with using spray chalk. To notice tendencies (for me, too much heel), and to purposefully experiment with more toe shots. To experiment with changing face angle, purposefully hitting push and pull (without moving feet), as a way to get more square. I didn't realize that face angle is 65% of the story.2. Rather than try for an extra 15 yards of driver by hitting faster/harder, an upward trajectory might accomplish the same thing.3. I have held unrealistic expectations of chip and pitch shots. A 10 handicapper hits a 15 yard chip to 4.3 yards. Not to 2 yards like somehow was in my head. This feelsrelaxing - something I can bring to the course.Easy read - one sitting for me.

Want to lower you HDCP now? Buy the Book

I'm an avid golfer. I play 2-3 times a week and have for most of the last 23 years. I carry a .5 index. I've read many many books on golf instruction. John's book ranks up there with Rotella and even Penick, for me. If you put these foundations to use in your game, it will lower your handicap, and most importantly increase your enjoyment of the game in a very short period of time. My handicap went from 1.5 to .5 in less than a month. That is unheard of. And I didn't make one swing change. I changed my outlook on how I process MY game. Matching my expectations to my skill level is freeing. Knowing what constitutes a good shot taking your skill level into account builds confidence and increases your enjoyment. JUST BUY THE BOOK!

Something for every level of golfer

Jon Sherman has succeeded where many others have failed. He has written an easy to digest book about improving your golf game. Notice I didn't say golf instruction. Instead he focuses on all the stuff you should be doing or thinking about to get better no matter how you choose to swing. While he acknowledges that mechanics are important, he lets the reader explore that elsewhere. HIs data is well documented using sources such as Mark Brodie (another must read) to convey his ideas. I love the short easy to digest chapters. A must read for any golfer from Pro to beginner and everyone in-between.

As a golfer always looking for a way to improve this book has had an immediate impact on my game and it is packed with many ideas for longer term improvements. Currently I play to an 11 index and my goal each time out is to break 80. After reading the first section on managing expectations, I shot a 77. My scores haven't always been that low since, but they are lower overall simply by applying the concepts in the first part of the book. I am currently applying the concepts in sections 2 & 3 (strategy and practice) to help me eliminate the blow up holes. And finally the last section on the mental game provides much to chew on. The book is well written, well organized and gives the golfer looking to improve plenty of additional resources to explore. I am now starting a re-read. Highly recommend - Cheers

This book is easy to read and the author presents concepts with clarity.

A great follow-on book or substitute/surrogate for Mark Broadie's "Every Shot Counts" book, the 4 Foundations book presents some of the same concepts in a simplified manner. Jon Sherman's writing style is easy to read and he relates his own playing and practicing experiences in ways that every golfer can relate to. I'm reluctant to share this book with the group of guys that I regularly play golf with ....... if I tell them about this book, it might make it more difficult for me to continue to take their money.

One of the best golf books I've ever read

I wish I would have read this book years ago. This is an excellent book for players of any skill level - from the 25 handicapper to the scratch golfer. I've spoken to professionals who espouse some of the very concepts Jon illustrates in this book. Make no mistake, this book won't give you any swing tips or technical advice - but that's what makes it great. It is primarily a "coaching" book, which so many players (myself included) desperately need.Sherman does a great job of illustrating and supporting his concepts with statistics and objective data, while presenting in the information in an easily digestible manner. I have seen immediate improvement in my game, and many others too - not because of technical advice, but due to course management strategy and an improved perspective while playing. I feel like I now make smarter decisions on the course and have more fun playing. I'd absolutely recommend this book to any golfer.

Something for every golfer and a resource you will return to often!

Over the past year to year and a half I've consumed almost everything that Jon has put out on his website and in social media. I didn't think the book would add a tremendous amount of information that I hadn't already read but I wanted to support Jon and his efforts. Little did I know that I would continue to gain information about how to improve my golf game, my golf practice, and overall just how I can improve my enjoyment of golf.I highly recommend getting this book, reading it front to back, but then returning to sections when you're looking for a refresher on a particular topic. This book will be a resource for your entire golf career because it's not about current technology, current teaching, or any other latest fad, it's about a foundation for approaching golf.Over the past year, using the principles and foundations found in this book, I'm currently at my lowest handicap and have shot the lowest round I've ever recorded. I'm looking forward to see where this journey takes me, but most importantly, how I can continue to enjoy the game of golf and all the benefits that it brings.

Essential reading for any golfer looking to improve. So, EVERY golfer.

Mr. Sherman has brought his lifetime of playing and thinking about the game of golf (and the thoughts of other experts as well) to this book. NONE of it is about how to swing the club. Rather it is a treatise on how to manage your expectations, your game on the course, the game in your mind, and your practice. Each section is broken down into easily digestible short chapters covering a single aspect of the Four Foundations. For people like me who want to take notes, Jon even provides bullet points at the end of each chapter summarizing the main ideas. So put down your pen.I find I'm best served reading just a few chapters a night so I have time to think about them and how they relate to my game. Clearly many of his ideas will take some time to implement in my game and practice. That said, his "2/3 Rule" made perfect sense to me as soon as I read it. I put it into play during my next round and turned what would've been a frustrating subpar round previously into a slightly above average and, more importantly, fun morning on the course trying to figure out how to get the best out of what I had on this particular day.Highly recommended. One of the best golf books I've ever read precisely because it never offered me a "can't miss" swing tip.

Incredible, informative resource.

If you love golf and you're looking for the perfect book that will provide you with everything you need to know about to improve your game, this is the book. I came upon this book while listening to "The Sweet Spot" podcast and it's been such a perfect comprehensive guide to understanding the most important elements of playing golf, practicing golf, and everything related to getting better at the game and enjoying it more. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking to improve in every area of the game as well as those just beginning. Since I started the podcast and read the book, I've lowered my handicap by 5 strokes by implementing several of the pertinent course management tips included.

Great read for golfers of all levels. One of the best golf improvement books i have ever read

As an avid golfer (6 handicap) and golf fitness professional for the last 10+ years, I have read and seen a lot of golf improvement and instruction books, Having followed Jon Sherman's work at Practical Golf I have been a huge fan of his approach to the game of golf and helping others improve. This book is by far one of the best game improvement books I have ever read. For most golfers, the last thing you need is another book on the mechanics of the golf swing. This is where this book shines, it is not another golf instruction book but rather a book on how to actually play the game. He talks about how to improve your attitude and enjoyment, how to improve your course management, how to properly practice, and how to approach the mental game of golf. All his information is backed by tons of research and statistics as well as his experience as a high-level amateur golfer. There are so many great nuggets that golfers of all levels can take away to help them not only improve their performance but their enjoyment of the game. I highly recommend this book to every golfer out there. - Dr. JP Guidry DPT TPI

Well written and not overly technical which I appreciate…I honestly couldn't put it down &/or recommend it enough. This book has made me a better player and more important: I've never loved & enjoyed the game more!

Great book for anyone wanting to take their game to the next level

Jon does a great job of articulating fundamentals of golf for recreational golfers to improve their game. I am sure tournament and advanced players can benefit from the information in the book as well but I am not one so I can just speak for myself. I have bought multiple copies and shared them with my golf buddies who are also improving their games thanks to nuggets they have picked up from Jon's book.I highly recommend anyone that wants to improve their game to read and APPLY the information Jon communicates through this book. And for deep dives into golf related topics I also recommend Jon's podcast.

Excellent, wonderful golf book

This book was recommended to me from a friend who knew that I also enjoyed Atomic Habits. Overall this book is similar in its approach to golf. It was very helpful to see all the stats about both pro and amateur golfers and how they play the game. The book goes over every aspect of the game from mental to physical and really made sense to me.I really appreciated the multiple resources provided and the discussion of the changing statistics of golf and also how to apply this to your own golf game. I think the best component is that is focuses on the approach to the game and not specifics as swing changes should be completed with a trusted coach.Overall would highly recommend this book to all golfers of all ages and skill levels.

The simplest way to think about how to play/practice and set expectations

I'll start off first - this was one of the easiest books to read. I read it in just under 9 hours total. Short chapters, succinct thoughts to take away, and the beauty is at the end of each chapter there are bulleted takeaways you can quickly revisit. I imagine this will be great for going back and reviewing later on.Second, it really was nice to hear Jon's thoughts about all aspects of golf, particularly I enjoyed the gambler mentality and the course management sections. All of his knowledge is backed by hard data, and examples, and I like that he gives examples of pros, scratch golfers, 5 handicap, 10 handicap, and golfers that shoot 90 or 100. Really simple mindsets to take to the course.Lastly, when it comes to expectations - he sets not only the appropriate data for all skill levels to take away, but lays it out in such a way that you can have a plan, and take it to the course and not beat yourself up. Obviously we all golf to have fun, and by setting expectations through Jon's lessons and mindset it definitely seems like I'll be able to easily do this.I highly recommend this book - its not a lesson book about your swing, but its a lesson and mindset book about how to practice, plan, and stay focused throughout your rounds, leading to more fun...and probably better scores.

If you're serious about improving your golf game, get this book

I've taken my handicap from a vanity 10 to a 1.3 in a little over a year, and I'm honestly not sure I could have done it without Jon. After playing fairly competitively in high school, I gave up the game for almost 20 years before getting bitten by the bug again during COVID. But when I came back, the game seemed to have changed so much I really didn't know where to start. I had a lot of catching up to do.Luckily, that's when I discovered Jon Sherman through practical-golf.com and The Sweet Spot golf podcast. As I read his articles and listened to the podcast, his simple but profound framework for improvement had me shedding strokes so quickly people were sure I was sandbagging. And in a way I was… my handicap just couldn't catch up with how quickly I was improving.Somehow Jon has managed to take all that knowledge spread over hundreds of articles and hours of podcasts, and he has managed to distill it into an easy-to-read and thoroughly enjoyable book that speaks to all levels of golfer. If you're new to the game, this book will save you years (or even decades) of frustration. If you're in single digits, give scratch a call and tell it you're on the way.Up until now when people have asked me what golf books I recommend, I point them directly to Adam Young's The Practice Manual. With this release, I now have two books to recommend (and the really nice thing is their approaches and teachings compliment each other beautifully.)So if you are serious about wanting to improve your game and have more fun on the course, get this book. Trust me, once you grasp the foundations and start putting these lessons into practice, your golf buddies will have no clue what hit 'em.

With all the golf information available, why buy this book? The book is ~400 pages, doesn't waste your time with nonsense and bloat, gives you the information, some analysis, and moves on to the next topic. AND summaries at the end of each chapter for those like me that are a little impatient.

Very valuable info

This book lays bare many myths and misconceptions about your game of golf. It is not a how-to-swing-the- club type of book but is a very comprehensive mass of information that will help you feel better about your game. It will spell out with facts and statistics what you should be focusing on the most and it will put into perspective every aspect of your game and how you should rightfully be responding to your (so called) bad shots.

Hands down, the best book you'll ever read on how to play the game.

About a month ago, I purchased your Four Foundations book from Amazon. I'm mostly through it at this point. If you are considering buying this book, you need to know that it is hands down, the best publication on how to play the game that I have ever read.I had hit a plateau in my game. I'm a decent player, but I have not been able to achieve any meaningful improvements over the past several years. I had been introduced to the concept of real strategy and how to apply it, but this book put it in very simple terms that were far easier for me to apply to MY game. That said, I went out recently and shot my best round ever, which included a -1 back nine on a course I've never played before. I've never shot under par on any 9 in my life, much less one I've never even seen that had a 71.5/145 rating! This book taught me to pay attention to the strike. I worked on that and found a setup position that allowed me to find the center of the face repeatedly. This book helped me pick an approach target that had me considering my shot dispersion in a way I never had before. The results speak for themselves. This book is absolutely incredible. I walk out on the golf course now and I am playing a completely different game than I was a month ago. This book has given me renewed energy and promise that my handicap can still be pressed lower. I've never been more excited to play my next round!

great advice

I've been playing this game as a mid single digit handicap since I was 12. College and High School golf teams, and USGA amateur tournaments, 50 plus years. This is one of the few books I have read that will lower your score and improve your understanding of the game without digressing into the nuances of technique. I wish I had read it 20 years ago. This book just seems to make it easier to understand the journey. Buy it whether you shoot low to mid 70s or 110 plus, and enjoy the game with the tools it provides. And you will. Good luck.

I'm about halfway through reading it and I already feel compelled to write a review. This book is excellent. It's so good in fact that I purchased another copy to give to my brother for Christmas. The tips Jon includes are applicable to golfers of any skill level and after having implemented some of them into my own game, I've already started to see an improvement. He covers everything from course management to pre-round preparation and includes tips on how to practice effectively. I'd say that if you're a golfer and looking to improve this book is a must read.

Change your mindset

I stumbled upon Jon on Twitter a couple months back and saw his ideas and how easy it is just to tweak a couple things to enjoy the game more, and shave some strokes off. Just after reading a thread of his, my mindset changed slightly so I knew I had to get the book.Since reading the book I have started to enjoy the game a lot more and I have started thinking ahead more even. I'm a 14 handicap golfer that will swing down to 10 once in awhile depending how I am playing. I truly feel this will help me in the future to just stay more consistent and not have those terrible 100 stroke outlier rounds anymore.I used to get very frustrated playing, and this book has helped me keep a level head and understand the statistics of the proximity to the pin on certain shots, and not be so obsessed with getting on the fairway with a safe club.Thank you for helping me fall back in love with the game again.

I have been listening to sweet spot for a little over a year now and am a big fan of Jon Sherman and Adam Young (Lenny, cue the Adam way music). This book is essentially a recap of all of the podcasts best topics with additional insights, data, and statistics. It really breaks down what you need in order to improve your golf game. I enjoy how he highlights throughout the book that golf is supposed to be FUN! I have the tools, now it's time to hold myself accountable to the four foundations.PSA. This book is NOT a book about swing mechanics/fundamentals.

I will be incorporating much of it into my game and practice in 2023 as I try to move my index to low single digits. Plenary of highlighted areas and bookmarks that I am sure will serve me well if I combine it with the GRIT that will be necessary.

Enjoy the game like never before!

Back in my salad days (20-25 years ago), I was a pretty good golfer. The energy and confidence of youth provided quite a few rounds in the 70s and I held onto it as long as I could. But all these years later, now in my early 50s, I simply don't play golf as much as I used to, and all I look for in my game today is enjoyment. That word – enjoyment – is what makes "The Four Foundations of Golf" a must-have textbook for those golfers who want to get back to the joy of the game we had in our youths. Without worrying about club position at the top, pronating or supinating, lag, forward press, blah blah blah. I don't expect much out of my game other than to enjoy the walk, weather, and companionship.Four Foundations will help the golfer keep perspective with regards to expectations, both in score and ball-striking ability. There is so much common sense commentary about what I can expect from my game, and how to get the most out of it. For example, I don't belong to a club anymore and spend more time practicing. I like and understand the idea of tracking where the ball hits the face at impact, and how it affects contact and distance. A little foot spray or baby powder will do it! Instant feedback.Course management is another important part of enjoying the game, and there is a wealth of knowledge in this book to help golfers like me avoid stupid mistakes and understand that it's OK to play for a bogie and the center of the green is your friend. Oh, and don't measure myself against the guys on TV! They are out there for a reason, and I have nothing to gain from comparing myself to the 0.01% of the best players in the world.I could go on, but overall, I recommend this book (textbook) for golfers who seek common sense advice and course management strategy. Get out and enjoy the game!

Chicken Soup for the Golfer

After following Jon's Twitter account and picking up lots of useful insights from that, I bought a copy of his book. As he mentions throughout, this is not a book with swing instructions or drills. It's more a compilation of the things he's learned and observed that have helped him become a better golfer and what he believes can help others who often get stuck in a never-ending cycle of instruction of swing tips and suggestions from online instructors and golf publications.I'd describe this book as a sort of "Chicken Soup" for golfers - things that we sometimes already know that are reinforced; often things we didn't know and are eye-opening. In any case he explains them in a way that makes them easier to apply on the golf course or when practicing. Without divulging too much, Jon has a way of illustrating how golfers sabotage themselves with their expectations of their game versus their skill level and their practice habits...and never in a condescending way. He also provides tips and insights that helped me re-frame my practice habits and my mental preparation before and during a round. This isn't rocket science, which makes it even more effective in my opinion. It's just a basic, "common sense" approach to golf and how to get more fun out of it. And it works. I have found I enjoy the game much more now; because I've reset my expectations of what good golf shots are, especially when compared to "scratch" or tour professionals, I've found I'm less disappointed with my shotmaking, and often am amazed at how well I can play when I just "let it go".This book appeals to all skill levels and ages. An absolute must have for your bookshelf.I'm a 55 year old golfer who's played for about 40 years and my handicap index is near the lowest it's ever been (5.5). I believe I still have plenty of opportunities to improve on that.

Great perspectives on all phases of the game

A wonderful program of thought, analysis, and systematic approach to enjoying rather than fighting the highs and lows of a difficult game. I highly recommend this book for players that would benefit from refocusing their physical and psychological approaches to having FUN again on the course and life.

A must-have in your library

The course management suggestions alone are worth the price of this book. You'll wonder why anyone should ever hit into bunkers if they play smart. You'll read a lot of the material and think to yourself, I knew this all along, but my pride got in the way or I fell victim to quick fixes that didn't work. The book puts swing lessons in their proper place, as only one part of your golf game. You still need to own everything. You need to make adjustments based on the feedback that you're getting for yourself. Sherman explains the level of commitment that it will take to get the most of out of your ability. It's high, but we chose this hobby because the rewards are worth the effort.Sherman's recommendations on other books and figures in the game were very helpful, as well. I've been delving into his Sweet Spot podcast archives for more details.I came back to golf after ten years away. If you're like me, this book will inspire you to get back into the game. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A complete guide to everything you need to know to get better at this game

I have read many golf books. This one stands out because it is a comprehensive but very accessible guide to everything you need to know to significantly improve in this game. It covers essentials from course management to how to practice to how to mentally approach the game. It will complement whatever technical swing book you are studying or lessons you may be taking. The chapters are short and to the point. Each chapter has a bulleted summary. After reading the whole thing, I was able to go back and quickly refresh on the main points prior to practicing or playing. Really an outstanding book!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've been reading the book during a non-golfing recovery period after some spinal surgery and feel I now have a lot of new insights and techniques to take back to the golf course to lower my scores. The principals discussed in the book make complete sense and I can't wait to put them into practice on the course.

I knew before reading that it was going to be great!

I have followed Jon's articles on his website for a long time and have already made significant changes to my thoughts and strategies on the course. They have made a huge difference for me in performance as well as enjoyment level. I was one who would blow up and pout and disassociate with my buddies when things started going badly. I'm proud to say I am no longer that person thanks to Jon.So when this book came out, I knew I would enjoy reading it. And it did not prove me wrong. Jon did a great job writing this book and he covers all of the subjects very well and easy to understand. I gained further insight on things I had already learned from him as well as learning new information that I did not know. I can't wait to put his ideas into practice and I am looking forward to even more improvement and enjoyment on the course. Thanks Jon! I really loved your book. All golfers should read this book. It can help everyone in my opinion.

Great book

I played golf in high school (about 30+ years ago) and basically gave it up; my clubs are no kidding about 40 years old. This year I decided to try to get back into the game, so I am slowly starting to acquire supplies, and soon, new clubs. This book has been helpful in reminding me - and in some cases learning the first time - more of the coaching and mental aspects of the game. How to make practice count, setting realistic expectations, etc. I'm sure I will be referring to it many times, and I am glad to have discovered the Practical Golf website, which I am soon to begin exploring as well. Well worth the time and cost for this book. Thank you,

Absolute Must Read for All Golfers

Jon Sherman's Four Foundations of GolfAn absolute must-read for any golfer of any level. I'm in my early 40s and wish a mentor, coach, or my dad had put a book like this in front of me when I was 9 years old (albeit the data Jon references was not available in the 1990s, but you get the point).I read the book from cover to cover over a few weeks. I made notes in line, tabbed the pages, and transferred many of Jon's strategy, practice, and mental game notes to my on-course reference book (Jon's book is slightly too large to carry on course). My three sons will read this book, specifically Part One: Managing Expectations. While you can reference specific areas of Jon's book directly without issue, I highly recommend you read Part 1 first. This section, along with the work of many of Jon's references, showed data and educated or corrected me on defining: what is a good golf shot; what is a good round; and setting realistic performance expectations. Part 1 is applicable beyond golf (as is the Mental Game, Part 4).Jon accomplishes exactly what he set out to do with his writing, which is to 1) spell things out clearly with little room for interpretation and 2) communicate in a simple and straightforward manner.Jon does not bog you down with technical aspects of the swing or other technical deep dives. He focuses on developing skill and transferring that skill to the course with Strategy (Part 2), including course management, proximity, shot patterns, course study, pre- and post-shot routines, and mental analysis. Finally, Jon is approachable and a credible teacher. He provides numerous other resources to build upon the material in his book. Jon also quickly responded with generosity to a personal request. I cannot recommend this book and Jon's online resources enough.5 stars.

@practicalgolf Received your book today and I can't stop reading it. Ready for some more fun playing golf. I only wish I could've read a book like this 50 years ago! Young and new players today will certainly benefit from your book for many years and enjoy the game for the rest of their lives.

Back after a broken bone in my foot, and after reading some pieces of @practicalgolf book, in particular about the driver, I drove the ball the best I ever have, and hit more fairways than ever. Thanks so much for this gem of a book, the four foundations of golf. Buy it. Now!

@practicalgolf seriously good book, unique format and just so much good info inside. I love the bite sized sections & summaries... It's very easy to pickup when I don't have a lot of time.... sometimes I find myself stepping away because there's so much good to digest

@practicalgolf I love your book Jon. It's concise and laid out logically, with plenty of really useful information. I think if one were to follow it, it would take years off of the learning curve. I only wish I had been told a tenth of your ideas about playing golf when I was young. Thanks

@practicalgolf got your book on Kindle right when it came out. Already 1 of my favorite golf books and has so much good non-technical information in here. Love it. Thanks brother!

Almost finished Jon Sherman's book "The Four Foundations of Golf". It is full of "practical" info that each individual concept by itself seems minimal, but all the concepts together will make a large impact on scores! Speed reading now, will go slow second time.

Golf needed a win and today it got one. I happened to snag a copy a couple days early after seeing it go up on Amazon & have been flying through it. I can already tell this is going to be one of those books I read multiple times & annoyingly recommend to my playing partners. twitter.com/practicalgolf/status/1539609247037542401
