Office vs Remote is NOT the core conversation we should be having.
Meetings vs async is what we should be talking about. That's the root cause for burnout.
2. Build a culture of written, asynchronous communication
This will save so many meetings, avoid people feeling left out if they weren't in the meeting, and protect focused work.
Your team will also be forced to clearly articulate and refine their ideas.
90% of decisions can be made async instead of having to schedule a meeting.
If you learn how to do this effectively, your team will love you for it.
Here's my 5-step process:
Today I started 2 weeks of vacation & it feels so good to fully disconnect w/o any pressure to be present “in the office”. Async makes this separation possible bc we’re already built to operate while teammates aren’t working - an underrated aspect of distributed work done well.
The future of work is remote and asynchronous. This means that we need to be intentional about inclusion and communication. We need to make sure that everyone feels heard and valued, regardless of where they are located.
Meetings are a necessary evil. Necessary, but still evil. So there should be as few as possible, and they should be as short as possible.
Successful distributed work is a result of coordinated asynchronous communication.
