It's definitely the rules about kicking a tenant out that make this hard + lack of supply. - Had to start with Airbnb, which isn't sustainable - Did an agency, but they charged loads of frees and only have short-term arrangements - Signed up for every housing site, alerts, emailed/messaged in French - Dropbox linked to be quick and have friends call, but once they found out I was from the US they just said "sorry, it's taken quickly" - Of the ones, that I did see, they were really skeptical (asking for employer verification, boss verification, having my colleague vouch for me, GrantMe) I did find success with Settlesweet and so did another colleague at Alan. The biggest thing was they found places, set up visits, and negotiated everything in French for me. It was like a housing EA. I was shocked and thought it was a scam, but they get paid from (actionlogement.fr/financement-mobilite) that relocators get eligible for and their incentives are aligned with renter (for once).

I have to give Settlesweet kudos here, they definitely helped our US->Paris relocation go...sweetly. It's truly a mind-bending experience to go from such a renter-favoring market (the US) to a market where you feel like you're auditioning for the lead in a film. 😂 Combined with some of the famous oddities of the French renting/banking ecosystem (you need to have an address to get utilities to get a bank account to get a home to have an address at) and the general enthusiasm that seems to exist here for overwrought bureaucracy, Paris is *hard* to move to. Thankfully, it's worth it once it's over! My colleagues were amazed that we were able to find a place to live before we arrived and get moved in so quickly after we landed, so all the credit to Mathieu Brun-Picard and team. Personally, I'd love to see some changes in rental laws that help to normalize/standardize how renters rent, such as some limits on what can be asked in a dossier and avoiding some of the "we need to meet you" / local guarantor requirements that are fraught with potential discrimination effects. The process feels arbitrary and capricious; we definitely had our share of WTF moments along the way.

Totally agree with you! Settlesweet supported us on everything! We had to move from Berlin to Paris in less then a month, with a 3 months old baby. They literally did everything for us! Research, dossier, appointments, activation of electricity and internet... also the day of the move our fly was in late and they did take care of the house check and key handover ❤️ Our account was Charles and he was always available and super nice! I can't recommend Settlesweet highly enough. In some cases you can get their services paid for, covered by a government grant. We weren't eligible so we paid out of pocket and it was worth every Euro (2200 Euros). Settlesweet takes care of the entire process of finding an apartment in Paris. They send you listings, accompany you to the viewings, built your portfolio to make you appealing to landlords, apply to apartments on your behalf, guide you in signing the contract, help you set up utilities, internet etc. We managed to move into an apartment under 2 weeks after landing in Paris (we only started looking once we arrived). And we LOVE the apartment we found.
